Changes in Spanish HGV restrictions

By virtue of the resolution of the General Directorate of Road Traffic, the following special measures have been introduced in 2023:

1️⃣Three items have been added in section C.1 regarding reserved lanes for vehicles with a large number of passengers (2 or more):
◾ Left lane of the Ma-19 motorway between KP 2.600 and 6.500 in the direction of descending kilometric points, access to the city of Palma (Mallorca-Illes Balears) if indicated by road signs.
◾ Left lanes of the A-2 motorway in the province of Madrid, in both directions, between KP 18.600 (Torrejón de Ardoz) to KP 4.300 (Madrid – the connection with the M-30 motorway) in the direction of descending kilometric points and between KP 6.100 (Madrid – M-30 motorway connection) 40) to 14,900 (Coslada/San Fernando de Henares) in the direction of ascending kilometric points if indicated by road signs.
◾ Left lanes of the V-21 motorway in the province of Valencia, in both directions, between KP 10.101 (Albuixech) and 16.470 (Alboraya) in the direction of ascending kilometric points and between KP 16.710 (Alboraya) and 10.390 (Albuixech) in the direction of decreasing kilometric points, if indicated by road signs.

In all cases, the minimum number of occupants is two people, including the driver and reserved lanes can only be used by two- or three-wheel motorcycles, passenger cars, buses with a maximum permissible weight of over 3.5 tonnes, articulated buses and multi-purpose vehicles.

2️⃣ Restrictions on the A8 between Cantabria and the Basque Country during the summer apply on all Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in July and August. Similarly, the usual summer ban on the N-631 in the province of Zamora for travel has also been extended to all Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in June.

3️⃣ An overtaking ban for HGVs has been introduced on certain road sections in the summer months:
➡In order to increase road safety and traffic flow, an overtaking ban may be introduced on certain days and in certain times for vehicles with a GVW of over 7.5 t, for vehicles that require a supplementary movement permit on dates and on routes referred to in Annex V(1) 3 of this Resolution.
➡The overtaking ban for HGVs may be established on roads and sections other than those indicated in the above-mentioned point 3 of Annex V to ensure road safety and facilitate traffic flow. Overtaking bans will be announced by variable message signs or permanent signs.

➡ Annex V, point 3:
Every Saturday in June, July and August
◾A-49 KP 0 Camas to KP 23 Huévar del Aljarafe from 9:00 to 11:00 and from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the direction of Ayamonte
◾A-49 KP 23 Huévar del Aljarafe to KP 50 Bollullos Par del Condado from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM in the direction Ayamonte
◾AP-4 KP 13.5 Dos Hermanas to KP 78 Jerez de la Frontera from 9:00 to 11:00 and from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the direction Cádiz
➡Every Sunday and holidays (*) in the months of June, July and August
◾A-49 KP 78 Jerez de la Frontera to KP 13.5 Dos Hermanas from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM in the direction of Sevilla
◾AP-4 KP 76.9 San Juan del Puerto to KP 0 Sevilla from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in the direction of Sevilla
*) Holidays celebrated in the whole country or in certain autonomous communities holidays on which the ban applies
➡Sundays: 2, 9, 16, 23 July and 6, 13 August
AP-1 KP 8 Rubena to KP 67 Ameyugo (Pancorbo) from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the direction of Vitoria

4️⃣ Additionally, on some roads, lanes in the opposite direction to the normal direction of traffic can be opened in order to improve the flow of traffic on sections of motorways with heavy traffic in accordance with Art. 41 of the general road traffic regulations. However, depending on the situation, it such lanes can be opened along road sections other than those indicated in Annex V, paragraph. 4 of this Resolution.

➡Annex V, point 4:
Lanes running in the opposite direction to the normal direction of traffic can be opened on the following roads and road sections:
◾A-1 KP 74 Buitrago de Lozoya to KP 23 Alcobendas
◾A-3 KP 35 Arganda to KP 104 Saelices
◾A-3 KP 339.85 Riba-Roja del Turia to KP 332.6 Cheste
◾A-31 KP 80.9 Albacete to KP 31.2 La Roda
◾AP-36 KP 146.3 La Roda to KP 122.1 San Clemente
◾AP-4/A-4 KP 48.10 Las Cabezas de San Juan (AP-4) to KP 547.3 Seville (A-4)
◾A-4 KP 67.8 Dosbarrios to KP 95 Tembleque
◾A-4 KP 242 Venta de Cárdenas to KP 232.9 Almuradiel
◾A-4 KP 292.5 Bailén to KP 264.2 Navas de Tolosa
◾A-49 KP 18.9 Sanlúcar la Mayor to KP 47 Bollullos Par Condado
◾A-5 KP 107.1 Talavera to KP 36 Valmojado
◾A-6 KP 34.3 Villalba to KP 19 Las Rozas.
